The Supreme Court stayed on the release of the upcoming film Hamare Baarah on Thursday, a day before its scheduled release. As per a report in Bar and Bench, the court asked Bombay High Court to take a quick decision on a petition which alleged that the film was derogatory to the Islamic faith.

The Supreme Court gave its decision after hearing a petition that challenged Bombay High Court’s refusal to halt the release of the film. When the counsel representing the film said that they had removed all the objectionable scenes from the promotional material as per the Bombay HC’s order, the court rejected the claim and said, “We saw the teaser today morning and all scenes are there.”

As the filmmakers’ lawyers argued that the makers would have to take heavy losses if there was a stay on the release, the SC said, “If teaser is so offensive then what about the whole movie… Prima facie it seems you have failed since you yourself deleted the scenes from the teaser.”

Earlier, in the Bombay HC, it had been argued that the film portrays Muslims in a wrong light. The plea said that the verse from the Quran spoken in the film was being misrepresented. The Bombay HC first restrained the makers to release the film till June 14. But, a day later, it ordered Central Board of Film Certification to form a panel to view the film. The court later allowed the release of the film if the makers deleted certain dialogues. The panel asked for more time to share their comments on the film but the High Court objected to that.
