Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Kannada actor Darshan’s arrest in connection with a murder case. Darshan, his friend Pavithra Gowda and 11 others were apprehended in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan who reportedly sent derogatory messages to Pavithra. This incident has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and among fans, highlighting the darker side of celebrity worship.

In his tweet, RGV remarked, “A star using one die hard fan to kill another die hard fan who was interfering in his personal life is a fit example of the bizarreness of the star worship syndrome. Fans wanting to order how their stars should run their lives is an unavoidable side effect of the same syndrome.”

Renukaswamy, a pharmacist from Chitradurga, had allegedly sent offensive messages to Pavithra Gowda. In retaliation, Darshan, Pavithra, and 11 others tracked him down and brought him to Bengaluru to a shed belonging to Darshan, where he was tortured with a belt and sticks. As he succumbed to the injuries, he was allegedly dumped in a stormwater drain nearby, according to reports. The police have detained the suspects, and the investigation is underway.

Ram Gopal Varma’s critique sheds light on the broader issue of the intense devotion of fans. RGV has been critical of fan worship earlier and has criticized Pawan Kalyan’s fans and their actions in the name of love for the Telugu star. He has yet again underscored the problems of fan worship that’s prevalent in the Southern part of the country.

Earlier, many fans lost their lives while erecting banners and during fan fights. However, stars more often than not remain silent about the clashes and deaths.
