All of us have shared, reposted and forwarded the famous ‘coconut’ meme on social media. For years, the poster from Tamil film, Thappattam, where a man and a woman are seen sharing coconut water, has been an inspiration for memes. While many find it ‘cringe-worthy,’ recently when Elon Musk shared the meme to trash the iPhone-ChatGPT deal, the film’s poster garnered global attention.

On June 11, Musk used the iconic Indian meme from the 2017 film to voice his concerns over data privacy issues that could arise from Apple incorporating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its system.

While sharing the meme, Musk captioned it, “How intelligence works.” The meme depicted a man and a woman sharing coconut water, with accompanying text discussing the potential privacy violations from Apple sharing data with OpenAI. After the Tesla CEO’s tweet, Adham Bava, the producer of Thappattam, took to X (formely Twitter) to thank the tech genius for making his film’s poster internationally famous. Bava reshared it and wrote, “My thanks to Elon Musk for making my movie Thappattam poster world-famous.” He also shared the film’s original poster.

The producer-director’s post quickly garnered attention, with many social media users congratulating him. The unexpected spotlight on Thappattam has brought new attention to Bava and his work who has been sharing  different versions of the poster on his social media handle. Thappattam is directed by S Mujibur Rahman and features Dona Rozario and Durai Sudhakar.

Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI. By sharing the meme, he highlighted the risks of integrating ChatGPT into Apple’s features, suggesting it could lead to significant data privacy issues. Musk’s post has sparked widespread discussions about data security and the implications of such tech partnerships.
