A day after undergoing tricep surgery for an old injury, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has revealed that he had neglected the issue for a long time, only opting for the procedure when the pain became unbearable. He also criticised certain media outlets for spreading misinformation and exaggerated reports and clarified that neither his knee nor his back was the source of the injury.

Mentioning that his tricep had been aching intermittently for a long time, sometimes more intensely than on other occasions, he admitted to not fully grasping the severity of the injury until the surgery. “Other times it caused unbearable pain… I didn’t really know how serious the injury was,” he told Zoom.

Recalling that it got hurt badly again while he was performing some action sequences for Koratala Siva’s Telugu movie Devara, starring NTR Jr in the lead role, Saif continued working, assuming everything was fine. “Then I was working out, and the pain felt aggravated and then it became okay.”

Pointing out that he got an MRI done when the bandwidth of the pain increased and doing anything strenuous caused him significant ache, Saif added, “It was then that we discovered that the tricep’s tendon was torn very badly, barely holding in place like a rubber band which can snap at any moment.”

Since the doctors didn’t advise an immediate surgery, Saif said he completed the talkie portion of Devara and other commitments before scheduling the surgery since he had a month off.

He, however, also stated that it was only during the surgical procedure, that it became apparent to even the medical staff how serious the injury was. “When they opened up the arm—and there is quite a big cut where they opened it up—they realised the surgery was very badly needed. They cleaned it up, removed the fluid, sorted out the nerve as well as stitched up the tricep so wonderfully. I must say the doctors in charge were brilliant. They made some incisions in the bone and re-attached the tendon with a kind of anchor with dissolvable material that blends into the bone and heals the whole arm perfectly,” he added.

The actor underwent the surgery at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital. On Tuesday, Saif, accompanied by his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, returned home after the surgery. He is taking a month-long break to recover.
