Veteran Kannada actor Dwarakish passed away at his residence in Electronic City, Bengaluru early on Tuesday at the age of 81. According to reports, the actor had earlier complained of respiratory illness and passed away while sleep.
Dwarakish, born in Mysore in 1942, started his career as a supporting actor. He is popular for his role as a comedian. After making his debut in the film Veera Sankalpa (1964), he shot to fame for his comedy roles and was considered to be on par with other comedy legends of that period like Balakrishna.
Later, Dwarakish turned producer and director and made some of the notable films of Kannada. He remade several Tamil and Telugu films in Kannada and made a prolific career as a filmmaker. Bhagyavantharu, Manku Thimma, Nyaya Ellide, and Nee Bareda Kadambari are some of the films produced by the veteran. He has so far directed 19 films and produced close to 50 films, making him one of the stalwarts of Sandalwood.
He is also known for his collaborations with Kannada star Vishnuvardhan, with whom he shared a great bond. Together they made films Apthamithra, Kalla Kulla, Prachanda Kulla, and Avala Hejje among others.
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth took to social media to express his condolences on the death of this dear friend. Rajini wrote, “The demise of my long time dear friend Dwarakish is very painful to me..starting his career as a comedian, he raised himself up to being a big producer and director.. fond memories come to my mind..my heartfelt condolences to his family and dear ones.”

Rajinikanth and Dwarakish have also collaborated on films such as Sahodarara Savaal, Maathu Tappada Maga, and Tamil film Garjanai.
CM of Karnataka Siddaramiah also shared his condolences on X.

Dwarakish’s mortal remains will be kept at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru on Wednesday between 7.30 am to 10.30 am for his fans to pay their last respects. The last rites will take place at Chamarajpet in Bengaluru
