Tamil cinema’s relationship with the state’s politics has consistently ignited discussions, a trend ongoing even today as more film personalities transition into politics, either by forming new parties or aligning with existing ones. From writer M Karunanidhi and actors MG Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, who all served as chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, to actors like Vijayakanth, Kamal Haasan, Sivaji Ganesan, R Sarathkumar, Udhayanidhi Stalin and presently “Thalapathy” Vijay, among others, the list of film stars turned politicians in Tamil Nadu is extensive.
Recently, actor-producer Vishal confirmed his impending political debut, announcing his intention to contest in the state Assembly elections of 2026. Meanwhile, opening up about his move further, Vishal indirectly took potshots at Rajinikanth, whose speculated entry into politics has long been a significant point of interest.
During a media interaction while promoting his upcoming film Rathnam, Vishal responded to queries regarding his political aspirations, stating, “Yes, I am going to enter politics. I won’t beat around the bush saying ‘I will come, or I will come only if He (God) tells me to, or I will come when I come’ etc. I will definitely enter politics.”
Although Vishal refrained from explicitly mentioning names, his comments were interpreted by fans and netizens as a veiled attack on Rajinikanth, who has often said his foray into politics would be based on God’s wish and decision whenever posed with questions regarding his plans.

Despite enduring speculation about his political trajectory for over two decades, the superstar confirmed only in December 2020 his intention to establish his own party in 2021. However, towards the month’s end, he reversed his decision, citing ill health and the prevailing pandemic circumstances.
Much like his “spiritual” statements in the past, Rajinikanth attributed his decision to God, saying: “I see this (hospitalisation) as a warning given to me by God. My campaign will impact health amid the pandemic.”
