Actor Aamir Ali, who used to work as a flight attendant before he became a model and then an actor, recalled the role that late businessman Subrata Roy played in his life. Aamir was working at Sahara Airlines before breaking out in the entertainment industry, and was upset that he wouldn’t be granted the leaves that he needed to pursue modelling gigs. And so, when he saw the founder and chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar on his flight, he took the opportunity to raise his concerns.

Aamir recalled the story in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, and said that his main goal in life back then was to start working as soon as possible because he wanted his mother to retire. “It’s an unreal story how I got my first job. Sahara Shri, who’s no more, he played a role in my modelling career. I’d started getting ads, but the airline wouldn’t give me offs.”

He continued, “I remember meeting him on a flight once, and I told him that I was doing ads. He said that he’d seen me. He used to smack me on the cheeks affectionately. I told him that I was having trouble getting leaves, and he asked me to bring him a piece of paper. The first thing I could find was that sheet that we put on trays, so I brought that to him. On that piece of paper, he wrote that I must be given leaves at even a one-day notice, and that I would be exempt from flying for however many days that I want. He signed it, and I gave it to my flight supervisor. A piece of paper signed by him was the equivalent of a legal document. He was Sahara Shri. Modelling became easier after that.”

On Thursday, Applause Entertainment unveiled the first teaser for the third season of the anthology streaming series Scam. The new season, directed by Hansal Mehta, will be based on the life of Subrata Roy. The businessman’s legal troubles were also covered in one episode of the Netflix documentary Bad Boy Billionaires, whose release Roy unsuccessfully tried to suppress. He died at the age of 75 in 2023, reportedly of complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
