Kalki Koechlin has always lived a non-traditional life. She grew up in Auroville and now, she lives in a beautiful home in Goa where she is raising her daughter Sappho with her partner Guy Hershberg. In a new video, Kalki gave a tour of her house and said that she feels like she “lives inside a church because of all the stained glass windows”. She also gave a tour of her garden where tree snakes often make an appearance.
Kalki shared that it was after her daughter’s birth that she thought of moving to Goa. “With a young kid, you need a little garden, you need space, you need outdoor activities or they get stuck to the screen. She was anyway getting stuck to the screen,” she shared with brut India. She also showed around the garden that surrounds her house which has jackfruit and lemon trees. Kalki said that living with an outdoor space has been quite nourishing for her daughter as she gets to do many outdoor activities.
Kalki also opened up about parenting and described it as a “really revealing lesson in psychology, which then leads to you going right back to your childhood and figuring out why am I like this?” She added, “It’s kind of almost like reliving your own life and your own childhood. So everything you have achieved goes away and that’s why we usually have postpartum depression and we’re just like… lost. But because of that you also re-find yourself in a new perspective because you can’t go back to who you were before.”

Kalki also opened up about the early years of parenthood and said that one needs all the help they can get but mentioned that the struggles never really go away. “Sometimes I think I am still in postpartum four years down the line,” she said.
Kalki and Guy welcomed their daughter Sappho in 2020. In an earlier chat with Mashable India, Kalki said that she was trolled for having a baby out of wedlock but added that not getting married was a conscious decision on their part. “Not being married…I was already divorced. He was like, ‘I’m not interested in marriage.’ So we just took a conscious decision not to marry but we were living together,” she said. Kalki was previously married to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
