This will be the third season of the Scam franchise. Scam 1992, which was the story of Harshad Mehta, was one of the biggest hits of 2020 and put lead actor Pratik Gandhi on the map. Scam 2003, the story of Abdul Karim Telgi, was directed by Jai Mehta.

Who was Subrata Roy?

Roy started his business with a modest capital of Rs 2,000 in 1978 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, before moving to Lucknow. Over the years, he established the Sahara empire with many chit fund schemes collecting millions of rupees from people living below the poverty line who were not equipped with enough knowledge of the banking sector. When market regulator Security and Exchange Bureau of India (SEBI) eventually made a case against him in 2010, it was found that he had collected over Rs 24,000 crore from three crore individuals.

In 2004, Time magazine declared the self-anointed Sahara Shri as the “biggest employer after the Indian Railways.” A close ally of Mulayam Singh Yadav, Roy’s business grew in the mid 1990s. So much so that in 2004, when he hosted his son’s grand wedding, the likes of Amitabh Bachchan were in the procession. He prided himself on his connections in the business, political and entertainment world.

He was jailed in 2014 after allegations that his Sahara India Pariwar had defrauded investors of thousands of crores. Roy died of cardiorespiratory arrest in November 2023.

Presently, Hansal Mehta is making his upcoming web series Gandhi, which stars Pratik Gandhi in the role of Mahatma Gandhi with his real-life wife Bhamini Oza playing the role of Kasturba Gandhi. In an earlier chat with Variety, Mehta spoke about the show and said, “We’re not trying to deify Gandhi, we see his story as a human story.” He also added, “The biggest learning from all that is, however great the man is, you treat him like a human being first. And look at the person with his flaws… and you build that character. Either you make him into a deity or make him a demon, we’re not doing that.”
