Actor-politician Jaya Bachchan was at the peak of her career and had given hits like Anamika, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke and Silsila, when she decided to take a break from films and focus on raising son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter Shweta Bachchan. The sudden decision to move away from films, while husband Amitabh Bachchan continued to work, made many claim Jaya ‘sacrificed her career’ for her family. However, the actor, in a recent interview, said that it was her choice to take a break from movies and there was no need for her to be tagged as ‘Mother India’.
In an interview with Times Now, Jaya said she is not okay with being made to look like someone who was made to do something. She said that at that time everyone looked at her decision to quit films as a big surprise and tagged her as ‘Mother India’, but in reality, she did what she wanted to do. She emphasised that it was not any kind of martyrdom.
The veteran actor said, “I’m not that kind of a person. No one can make me do what I don’t want to.”

Jaya Bachchan returned to the screen after 17 years with the 1998 film Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa and since then has been part of several films such as Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Ki & Ka and more recently Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
