Little is known about Diljit Dosanjh’s personal life; the singer-actor has stuck with his decision to not speak publicly about his family. And this is one of the key reasons why he’s developed a ‘beeba munda (good boy)’ persona. But his friends shed light on who Diljit is as a person in a new Indian Express profile, revealing that he is married with a child. “An intensely private person, little is known about his family but friends say his wife is an American-Indian and they have a son, and his parents live in Ludhiana,” the profile read.

Diljit was born in 1984, a year whose significance will never be forgotten in the state of Punjab and India, and began making his own music when he was still in his teens. “His father Balbir Singh was a bus driver with Punjab Roadways who enjoyed playing hockey in his spare time,” Makhan Singh, the sarpanch of Diljit’s childhood village, told The Indian Express. Diljit was sent to live with his uncle at the age of 11, and he said in a recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia that this soured their relationship.

Balvir Boparai, a singer-composer who worked with a Ludhiana-based record company decades ago, recalled in the Indian Express profile how Diljit approached him in the year 2000, looking for opportunities in the state’s thriving music scene. “He barely had any beard, but he had the rhythm, did bhangra well, and tied a very good turban. He was 16 when we cut his first album Ishq Da Uda Ada (The ABC of Love). By the time he was 17, he was charging Rs 50,000 for a show and was getting booked almost every day during the wedding season,” said Boparai, who partnered with him.

In the last year alone, Diljit has made waves as a musician internationally, becoming the first Indian artiste to perform at Coachella and then collaborating with international pop star Sia. He also performed at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding festivities, a day after Rihanna. More recently, Diljit was seen in the film Crew, alongside Kareena Kapoor. And next, he’ll star in perhaps his biggest Hindi film yet, Amar Singh Chamkila, based on the life of the slain Punjabi folk singer.
