Wherever Lokesh Kanagaraj goes, he invariably gets asked about his upcoming films—particularly about his film with superstar Rajinikanth, tentatively called Thalaivar 171. He met the media after the launch of his latest original song, Inimel, directed and composed by Shruti Haasan. During the meeting, he addressed the inevitable question on Thalaivar 171.

Earlier, Lokesh had said that the film will go on floors in the summer of 2024, and looks like things are right on track. The director said the film will be going on floors in June and added it will take at least a year or a year and a half to wrap up the projects.

Lokesh, who has already received an advance for three upcoming projects, said, “The pre-production work is on. The film will go on floors in June. The entire process will take around one and a half years. One month after the completion of Thalaivar 171, we will begin Kaithi 2 with Karthi. So, the work has been going on.”

After Kaithi 2, Lokesh is expected to direct a standalone film with Rolex (starring Suriya) character from Vikram. He will conclude his cinematic universe with Vikram 2, which will star Kamal Haasan in the titular role.

Recently, Lokesh made his debut as an actor with Inimel, which is a song about the different stages of a relationship—from the first date to divorce. Written by Kamal Haasan, the song, despite its bleak theme, ends with an optimistic take on relationships and the cycle.

Currently, Lokesh is on a break from social media platforms to write the film. He recently turned 37 and celebrated his birthday with his friends and Leo co-writer Rathna Kumar and Kaithi actor Arjun Das.
