The trailer for director Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan showcases large-scale action set pieces, exotic locations, and glamorous dance sequences for a uniquely Bollywood offering that combines both the past and the present of the film industry. While the movie doesn’t have anything to do with the original Bade Miyan Chote Miyan film beyond the title, it does feature buddy comedy elements with Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff partnering up as the central pair, replacing Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda.

But while Amitabh and Govinda played cops in the 1998 comedy film, the new Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is a globe-trotting action extravaganza in which Akshay and Tiger play elite soldiers who go on a mission to stop a vengeful masked villain who wants to use an AI weapon to destroy India. The villain is played by Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran, who will soon be seen in the ambitious film, Aadujeevitham. Prithviraj previously attempted to crossover to Bollywood with the 2012 film Aiyyaa.

The over three-minute-long trailer opens with the villain, who introduces himself as ‘pralay (apocalypse)’. He wears an ornate mask, has long hair, and wields a massive machine gun. The trailer shows the villain stealing a weapon from Indian armed forces. “This package is the most powerful and dangerous weapon ever to be made in this country,” Ronit Roy’s character tells us, before summoning the only two people who can retrieve it. These are our protagonists, Bade Miyan and Chote Miyan, played by Akshay and Tiger. After three full minutes in which the two heroes make quips, perform high-stakes stunts, and engage in gunfights and car chases, the trailer shows them turning against each other for reasons that will probably be explained in the movie. “Hum dono ek dusre ke liye jaan de sakte hain, par ek dusre ki jaan le bhi sakte hain (We can kill for each other, but we can also kill each other),” they say, as the title pops up.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan promotions have so far included a teaser, several songs shot in foreign locations, and a making-of video that highlights Ali Abbas Zafar’s use of in-camera action. This comes after Akshay Kumar faced criticism for shooting a string of recent films in-studio, with visual effects being used for set extensions. Akshay has had a rather rough last few years, with a string of flops that ended only with last year’s OMG 2. Similarly, even Tiger, Manushi and Alaya are coming off major flops, which makes the stakes for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’s success sky-high for every cast member.

The budget for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has been reported to be over Rs 300 crore. The movie will be released in theatres on April 10, a day before it clashes with the Ajay Devgn-starrer Maidaan during the Eid holidays.
