Though many have been praising Bramayugam as one of the finest Indian horror films of recent times, director Rahul Sadasivan recently stated that the Mammootty-starrer, however, does not fit into the conventional definitions of the genre.
“I would call it a mystery thriller or psychological thriller with horror elements. It’s not a conventional horror film that will give you chills all the time,” he said during a chat with Kaumudy Movies.
Mentioning that he conceived Bramayugam as a single film and hence poured his all into it, Rahul nevertheless did not rule out the potential for a sequel. “I invested my whole energy in that film and that energy is over. The ending has been crafted in such a way that it’s left to interpretation. A sequel might or might not happen,” he added.
Revealing that even during the initial stages, he never conceived Bramayugam in colour, Rahul told Manorama Online that he believed monochrome would help ignite curiosity in audiences. “Since it’s a period movie, things would seem artificial or as if we erected sets had it been in colour. Black and white helped things blend seamlessly,” he added.
During a chat with Silly Monks Mollywood, he mentioned that the main reason behind opting for black and white was to break viewers’ habit of watching only colour films.

Opening up about why Bramayugam’s team, including Mammootty, prior to release, repeatedly requested audiences not to keep their hopes too high, Rahul Sadasivan said that after the film’s initial posters and teaser came out, many remarked that it was very remarkable. ‘So we became cautious. People began assuming that it would scare them a lot, probably because of my previous film, Bhoothakalam. Since Bramayugam is not intended to scare people that much, we decided to emphasize it as much as possible.’
Asserting that the theme of power and corruption occurred to him first, and the horror elements were incorporated only later, Rahul shared that the title Bramayugam had been in his mind even before Bhoothakalam, driven by a desire for a title that starts with ‘B’ and ends with ‘M’.
Pointing out that he took as much time as required during the pre-production phase, Rahul mentioned, “One can never achieve 100 per cent during the filming process. The maximum possible is 50 to 60 per cent. But in Bramayugam, I managed to achieve almost 80-85 per cent, and what you see is almost what I had envisioned.” He also commended Jotish Shankar’s expert art direction for helping enhance the film’s world.
Actor Sidharth Bharathan and Arjun Ashokan recalled that Rahul Sadasivan and the technical crew had created miniatures of the set and blocked the scenes with their help. “At least one month before the commencement of filming, we visited the location and planned all the shots. So, Jotish created the necessary things as per the shots planned. We set a visual language before filming. Even the transitions were pre-planned,” Rahul said, as Sidharth mentioned that Rahul had a storyboard for the entire work.
