Director Rahul Sadasivan’s Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam is continuing to translate positive buzz into strong box office numbers, having recently passed the crucial Monday test in India. The movie has been receiving rave reviews, particularly for Mammootty’s performance, which many consider unprecedented, especially considering his five decades of stardom in the industry.

However, director Rahul and actors Sidharth Bharathan and Arjun Ashokan recently revealed that the atmosphere on the set was nothing like that depicted in the movie, a horror-thriller set in the middle of a tropical forest. “The entire set would go silent as soon as Mammookka (Mammootty) arrived,” Rahul told Manorama Online, to which Sidharth added, “But it would return to its original state soon after.” “The atmosphere on the set was as if we were making a comedy film,” Rahul said, laughing.

Opening up about his experience working with Mammootty, Sidharth said, “When such a senior actor is reinventing himself, it inspires us to push our boundaries.”

Arjun Ashokan, who previously worked with Mammootty in Unda (2019), recalled during a chat with Silly Monks Mollywood, “I was a member of the Mammootty Fans Association during my school days. So, once I entered the cinema, my biggest dream had been to work with him. Though I received an opportunity to work on Masterpiece (2017), I couldn’t join due to prior commitments. It was right after Parava, and I got to know that it was Mammookka who suggested my name. It was such a proud moment for me.” In the same interview, Sidharth recalled that he met the Malayalam megastar for the first time when the latter was working on his father’s film, ace filmmaker Bharathan’s Amaram (1991), which is often regarded as a landmark movie in Mammootty’s career.

Dubbing Mammootty as an inseparable part of Malayali culture, Rahul said, “Do any of us actually remember the first time we saw him on-screen? Like our parents, he too has been a part of our lives forever. While writing Bhoothakalam, Mammootty’s Thaniyavarthanam served as a big inspiration for me. The film also discussed themes such as society’s descent into chaos, social stigma, etc. It was a major reference point for me.”

Renowned author TD Ramakrishnan, who penned Bramayugam’s dialogues, asserted that no other actor can deliver lines like Mammootty. “He would often ask questions, offer suggestions, etc. He is very involved in the entire process,” the writer noted.

Emphasising that there was no space for improvisation since the language used was not contemporary, Rahul added that the only person who could do that was Mammootty. “Even I had no confidence to attempt to improvise the dialogues. But Mammookka did it effortlessly, thanks to his extensive experience,” Rahul told Manorama Online.

During that conversation, Arjun and Sidharth also joked that they didn’t receive any compliments from Rahul during filming. “But when shooting Mammookka’s scenes, Rahul would call cut and then say ‘brilliant’ or some other compliment,” they laughed. Rahul told Kaumudy Movies that while he always aspired to work with Mammootty, he was waiting for the right subject to approach him.
