Almost four years after she was stabbed by a man for turning down his marriage proposal, television actor Malvi Malhotra has finally received justice. A sessions court in Mumbai convicted and sentenced the man to three years of rigorous imprisonment last week, News18 reported.

On the night of October 26, 2020, in Andheri’s Versova area, Malvi was stabbed in her abdomen and hands with a knife by Yogesh Mahipal Singh, who claimed to be a producer. While the assailant fled the scene, the actor, hailing from Himachal Pradesh, was immediately rushed to a hospital by locals and she eventually recovered from her wounds. The police, meanwhile, registered a case of attempted murder and stalking against Yogesh, and the court has now found him guilty of these charges.

“There was a lot of mental trauma I went through. More than the physical scars, it was the mental agony that impacted me,” Malvi said during a chat with News18 after the court verdict. The actor also elaborated on her struggle with PTSD after the incident, mentioning that she felt extremely scared initially, as if someone was constantly following or chasing her. Malvi stated, “But my family, especially my dad, helped me. He told me that physical injuries would heal but I shouldn’t live my life with fear. He told me to learn self-defense and forced me to step out of the house and go shopping or do something else that makes me happy.”

In her statement to the police at the time, Malvi Malhotra said that in 2019, she “received a friend request from Yogesh on Facebook”. After accepting it, the two chatted often and met three to four times. However, when Yogesh proposed to her and she declined, he kept insisting that she marry him, prompting her to cut ties with him.

On the night of the incident, Malvi recounted that while walking toward her residence, Yogesh arrived in his Audi and demanded that she talk to him. When she ignored him, “he removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed me thrice,” she said in her statement to the police. Besides her work in Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu films, Malvi has also appeared in television serials and music videos.
