After seven seasons of Bigg Boss Tamil, the eighth season promised to deliver something new and exciting. And that is what happened over the course of a few hours as the show, hosted by Vijay Sethupathi, who took over the duties from Kamal Haasan, was launched amid much fanfare on Sunday. The reality show, which has the theme of Men vs Women, welcomed 18 contestants, with varying degrees of success, from the world of cinema and television. Even before the 18 contestants could gather in the newly designed Bigg Boss Tamil house, understand their sleeping arrangements, have their dinner, know each other’s names, Vijay Sethupathi and team Bigg Boss Tamil had a shocking announcement. “In the next 24 hours, one of you would be eliminated,” said the host, who signed off soon after leaving the housemates and the audience in complete shock and surprise.

Unlike the ending of the show, Bigg Boss Tamil Season 8 had a rather sedate beginning as we were just warming up to the new setup, and not having Kamal Haasan kickstart proceedings. While the show took time to come on board with the new host, who was also finding his feet in a new territory, the assembly line of contestants walking on to the stage, and interacting with the host kept the engagement high. As they left the stage, and moved into the house, Vijay Sethupathi handed them a replica of the winner’s trophy, and gave them a sense of being the winners even before completing Day 1 of their 105-day journey.
With an elimination waiting right at the end of the first day, one thing is very clear. The makers of the hit reality show had their work cut out right, and they have faced this tough delivery with an impressive straight drive. Let’s hope the following days manage to keep up to the standards of Day Zero, and we warm up to the eclectic set of contestants just like we warmed up to the hosting style of Vijay Sethupathi.
