Brazil’s Supreme Court delayed its decision on restoring social media platform X’s services after the company’s lawyers paid outstanding fines to the wrong bank. On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the payment must be transferred to the correct bank before considering X’s request to resume operations.

Earlier in the day, Elon Musk-owned X had asked the court to lift its suspension in Brazil, claiming all pending fines had been paid. However, the platform still owes over $5 million in fines, according to the court’s previous ruling.

X has been suspended in Brazil since August 30, when Justice Moraes ordered a national ban on the platform for failing to comply with court orders related to moderating hate speech and failing to appoint a legal representative.

In addition to the ban, Moraes also imposed fines on individuals using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access X during its suspension. X has since complied with several court orders, including blocking certain accounts under investigation, and asked for permission to resume its services.

Though the platform remains officially blocked, some users, including journalists, have been able to access it recently. Once the fines are properly paid, Brazil’s prosecutor general will give his opinion on X’s request to lift the suspension.
