The US State Department confirmed on Friday that Kamel Ahmad Jawad, an American citizen from Dearborn, Michigan, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon earlier this week. Jawad’s death was initially reported by his daughter, a friend, and US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents his district.

A State Department spokesperson said, “We are aware and alarmed by reports of the death of Kamel Jawad, who we have confirmed is a US citizen”, according to a report by Reuters.

The department had initially identified Jawad as a legal permanent resident earlier in the week, but later clarified his citizenship status.

The spokesperson reiterated calls for Israel to exercise caution during its military operations, stating, “As we have noted repeatedly, it is a moral and strategic imperative that Israel take all feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm. Any loss of civilian life is a tragedy.”

Israel has been targeting Hezbollah militants, backed by Iran, who have launched rockets into Israel since the Gaza conflict began over a year ago. The ongoing Israeli military campaign in Lebanon has killed hundreds and injured thousands, according to the Lebanese government.

However, it has not specified the breakdown between civilian and Hezbollah casualties. Over 1.2 million Lebanese people have also been displaced by the bombardment.

In light of the violence, Michigan’s governor has called on the US government to step up efforts to assist Americans, many from Michigan, who remain trapped in Lebanon amid the conflict.
