Yash Johar, the acclaimed producer and Karan Johar’s father, died in 2004 due to cancer. This was six years after Karan Johar debuted as a filmmaker with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Recently, the filmmaker-producer opened up about the regret he has after losing his father.
In an interview with Jai Madaan, Karan Johar talked about his father in detail. He said, “I have two things to say. Sometimes they say the worst thing to happen to anybody is a terminal disease. Cancer took my father away. I never wanted to see him suffer. He suffered only in the chemo therapy days. That put aside, I am only glad of one thing that I was given time. I was told he has only a year or 10 months. I knew that he was going to leave us. Because I had that time, I had several conversations with my father and shared things that were close to my heart.”
Sharing why it was important for him to have all the conversations they had in his last few months, Karan revealed, “My dad was very closed person. He was very closed about his thoughts. He always hid his feelings. He never expressed them. He would never share what he is going through–his pain, his sufferings. But, in that one year, I had several conversations. I am grateful to the universe that I had this opportunity.”

He added, “Today, I at least don’t regret not sharing things close to my heart with him.” However, he claimed, “The only regret I have is that he couldn’t see the kind of phase I went through after he left us in terms of Dharma Productions. The phase where he would have been so proud for the company, that he couldn’t see. This is the only regret I will always have.”
Previously talking to Faye D’Souza, Karan shared, “Right after Dostana, Papa saw a series of about five failures. He had a small export division, which he wanted me to take over eventually. During those days, we used to get movies financed. Financers would give us money and we would pay them back with interest. When one of the films failed, my mum (Hiroo Johar) sold my nani’s flat, and when another faced the same fate, she sold some of her jewellery. My father had to sell a little property he had in Delhi. These are the stories I have heard.”
“Fortunately, though coincidentally, my first, second, and third films did really well. My father passed away after that. Then I took over Dharma. A lot of the money that we have made at Dharma has been made since I started directing. I feel very proud that I could live my father’s dream”, he added. Yash Johar was 74 at the time of his passing.
On the work front, Karan Johar recently made his directorial debut with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The filmmaker is also awaiting the release of his production venture Jigra, which he has co-produced with Alia Bhatt.
