Pan-Indian films and actors crossing language barriers to act in new industries might not seem that novel a thing anymore. But there used to be a time when only a select few films and actors transcended linguistic boundaries to become successful everywhere. In fact, it might come as a shocker that the effortlessly funny Jr NTR, who enthralled people worldwide with his performance in RRR, and regaled the audiences with his interviews and press meets, was a completely different person when he visited Mumbai for the first time.

“I came to Mumbai for the first time for an ad shoot. I was really really scared. I had so many questions… How is it going to be in Mumbai? Are the technicians going to behave the same way as the South? It was very intimidating,” said Jr NTR, who shared that things got better when he was promoting SS Rajamouli’s RRR. “When I came for RRR, I didn’t have the same baggage as I had before. Of course, Rajamouli was there as a friend, brother, guide and director. While promoting RRR, that fear broke.”

Comparing his comfort level while promoting his upcoming film, Devara, to the previous times he was in Mumbai, Jr NTR said, “Now, Mumbai doesn’t feel alien to me. In fact, I was in Juhu for 20 days while working on a movie, and the city just feels like home. From the many unanswered questions in my head, to finally realising that everything just comes under one umbrella of cinema was the biggest learning.”  Chiming in with his opinion on working in a different language in a completely new setting, Saif Ali Khan, who plays a pivotal role in Devara, said, “I was more tensed about the language. I knew the people were welcoming and nice. But yeah, the horizons have broadened.”

The interaction, hosted by Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, also featured director Koratala Siva and actor Janhvi Kapoor, who is making her Telugu debut with Devara. When Sandeep was asked by Janhvi if he was ever intimidated by the city and its industry, he said that Siva too had asked something similar to him before the interview. “I have spent four and a half years in the city making two films — Kabir Singh and Animal — and it is only in the last 6-7 months that the city has felt like home.” Summing it all up, Jr NTR said, “I am happy that the imaginary lines and walls are breaking down.”
