Rapper Badshah said that he doesn’t believe in asking for work, and believes that one’s talent will shine without any strings being pulled. He recalled the story of Dharma Productions reaching out to him to secure the rights to his song “Saturday Saturday” and the power move that he played in that moment. “I don’t think one should reach out for work, people should approach you,” he said in an interview with The Lallantop.

He explained, “Do your work so well that you never need to go to anybody for opportunities. Put everything you have into your work. Make it the best, leave no stone unturned.” Recalling the Dharma story, he said that the director and star of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Shashank Khaitaan and Varun Dhawan, happened to listen to “Saturday Saturday” in a club in Chandigarh, and decided to use it for the film. They also tried to create a version of it themselves before approaching Badshah.

He said, “Someone from Dharma reached out and said that they want the song. I said, ‘Cool, you can have it’. They said, ‘Okay, come to Mumbai’. And I said, ‘Suno, agar tumhe chahiye toh tum Chandigarh aao (Listen, if you want the song, you come to Chandigarh)’. And they actually came to Chandigarh. Of course, I went to Mumbai later.”

Badshah said that thus began his creative partnership with Dharma, but he didn’t meet Karan Johar until much later. In the same interview, he said that Karan offered him acting roles in Lust Stories and Good Newwz, but they eventually went to Vicky Kaushal and Diljit Dosanjh. Badshah’s songs have also appeared in Dharma’s Kapoor & Sons, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, in addition to Good Newwz and Humpty Sharma. He also appeared in an episode of Koffee with Karan, alongside Diljit Dosanjh.
