Starring Ananya Panday in the lead role, the trailer of Amazon Prime Video series Call Me Bae dropped on Tuesday. The show stars Panday as a rich heiress who loses all her money and moves to Mumbai to start from scratch. While the premise could be presented in a thousand ways, creator Ishita Moitra has chosen a light-hearted tone where Panday’s Bae lives in a world that’s a little too over the top and where her point of view of looking at her problems is more comic than serious.

The trailer gives a sneak into Bae’s (Panday) luxurious life where she has never even thought about finances. But, her life changes after she loses everything, and appears to part ways from her husband as well. Towards the end of the trailer, there is a dig at that infamous moment that happened between Ananya and Siddhant Chaturvedi on a debut actors’ roundtable where Siddhant likened the starting point of Ananya’s struggles to someone’s aim in life, thus setting the wink-wink tone of the series.

One can’t deny the similarities to the popular US sitcom 2 Broke Girls where one of the protagonists has a similar trajectory. Beth Behrs plays Caroline who loses her fortune and has to start from scratch with the other protagonist, played by Kat Dennings.

In a statement, Ananya said that she knew that Call Me Bae would be special even before she heard the script. “As an actor, it is always exciting and rewarding to play a multi-layered character like Bae. There’s more to Bae than what meets the eye and that is what makes her journey from heiress to hustler, compelling and intriguing. Despite the challenges she faces, she remains true to herself, retaining her innocence and zest for life. This authenticity is what drew me to the role.”

Karan Johar, who has produced the show, said in a statement, “While there have been many stories that follow the rags-to-riches trope, Call Me Bae offers a fresh twist by turning the genre on its head. It centers on a young woman from a privileged background, where extravagance was a birthright, who, due to unforeseen circumstances, must now navigate life on her own and hustle and reinvent herself in the bustling city of Mumbai. Through this transformative journey, she discovers her true passions and learns to stand on her own. This series presents a modern coming-of-age story with a playful, comedic edge that I’m confident will captivate audiences across India and globally, resonating with viewers from all walks of life.”

The show also stars Vir Das, Varun Sood, Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, Vihaan Samat, Muskkaan Jaferi, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Lisa Mishra, and Mini Mathur among others. Call Me Bae starts streaming on September 6.
