Manoj Bajpayee, who has been a part of the movie business for over two decades, recently recalled being part of Yash Chopra’s Veer Zaara. While the actor expressed immense joy and pride in being able to work with the ace filmmaker, he also spoke about his disappointment in the way his character was treated in the film.

In an interview with Radio Nasha, Manoj Bajpayee shared his experience of working in Veer Zaara and revealed why Yash Chopra chose him for the role of Zaara’s fiance. He said, “I had a good experience working in Veer Zara. But, the reality is I shot for the film for three days in Delhi and then one day in Amritsar. So, my work was done in these four days. I was more like a guest in the film. However, Yash Chopra gave me immense respect and so did his team. I was simply happy that someone like Yash Chopra directed me. I will cherish this forever.”

He added, “He was quite honest to me about my role in his film. He said, ‘This is the role I have for you, I mostly make romantic films, but when I had to cast for this role, I could only think of you.’ Yash ji had watched me in Pinjar and that’s why he cast me for that role.”

As part of the interview, Manoj Bajpayee was asked to share feedback about a few of his films. When asked about Satya, Manoj said that “there should have been more scenes between Bhiku Mhatre and his wife.” And when he was asked about Veer Zaara, Manoj said that his character should have been given more scenes.

“I know that it was a love story and more focus is given to the hero and heroine of the film, but to make my character look greyer, I think there should have been a few more scenes. Because, eventually when you see it, his fiancé cheated on him. So I believe there should have a scene where they should have showed that the character has been wronged completely. There was just one scene where he speaks to the character of Shah Rukh, but I think there should have been another scene to justify the character,” he said.

The film, released 20 years ago, was a major box office success. The film also starred Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan in important roles. Veer-Zaara became one of the highest-grossing films of 2004 in India.
