Alia Bhatt was all of nine when she first met 20-year-old Ranbir Kapoor for a photoshoot done for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Balika Vadhu. While the film didn’t get made, years later, Ranbir and Alia, who had always been vocal about her admiration for her “crush” Ranbir, would fall in love with each other and get married. The Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva co-stars, who tied the knot in April 2022, after four years of dating and living-in, are parents to daughter Raha Kapoor, who is the darling of the paparazzi. In a recent interview with Nikhil Kamath on his podcast show People WTF, Ranbir opened up about being romantic around Alia and his actor wife being his best friend.

The Animal actor shared insights into their relationship, describing Alia as the person he feels most at ease with. “Watching movies together, laughing, chatting…that’s what romance is,” Ranbir explained. “ I am lucky to have married someone who I am extremely closest to as a friend. We can really chat, laugh, bi**h… like she (Alia) is my best friend. I got really lucky with that. Alia is really a wonderful person, somebody who can really.. she’s very colourful. She is 11 years younger than me. It is very funny,” he added.

Ranbir was assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black when he first met Alia. “I still have that photoshoot with me. I have met Alia over the years and I knew that this person was special. Ranbir Kapoor, who dotes on Alia Bhatt, said she makes him smile and he is happy coming back home to her. “I love going on holidays with her but I love coming home with her,” he shared. The Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani actor, who is a fan of Alia’s work, couldn’t stop gushing about his wife’s achievements and her talent. “She’s a very ambitious girl and an overachiever. She is extremely passionate about her work  and extremely intelligent,” said Ranbir, adding that he really had to work hard to get his wife’s attention as she has phases where she’s really “fragmented”.

“You really have to get her attention but over the years, after cribbing, I have got her attention now. She has really made an effort and I must acknowledge that everything that I complained about and she complained about, but I think she has made better efforts than I have,” he stressed. Ranbir admitted that Alia has changed more for him than he has for her. “ I am acknowledging it but I should do something about it. I should change a bit,” he added.

Ranbir’s reflections also touched on his parents’ tumultuous relationship and how it influenced his views on marriage. He expressed gratitude for Alia’s calming presence and her ability to ease his insecurities, especially when their daughter Raha is involved. “She used to speak in a very loud tone. I think my father’s (Rishi Kapoor) tone, growing up, always rattled me. So she really made efforts to change that. And that’s not easy when you’ve lived 30 years of your life speaking in a certain way. She’s someone who instinctively reacts to say, if Raha falls down. There’s a reaction that throws me off. She makes certain things to put me at ease. I hope I could say there’s something I did to put her at ease, but I don’t think I’ve done it yet,” he admitted

Ranbir candidly discussed the adjustments necessary for their marriage to thrive. “You have to let go of your personality. She’s let go of her personality,” he said. Alia’s efforts to soften her naturally loud tone, in response to Ranbir’s childhood discomfort with loud voices, exemplify the sacrifices both have made to ensure their relationship flourishes  “We’re adjusting to each other to make it liveable for each other. Any marriage is doing that. You have to let go, you have to adjust, you have to sacrifice facets of it. It’s impossible for two people to like each other the way they are,” he stressed.
