Actor-filmmaker Randeep Hooda said that he is trying to change long-held notions about work, as he has more responsibilities now as a married man and a film producer. He said that he used to operate under the principle that his work should do the talking, and that he needn’t indulge in self-promotion or participate in film projects that pander. But now, having helmed his first film as director and gotten married, he feels that he needs to shed his past ‘socialist’ approach to money. The actor tied the knot with Lin Laishram in 2023, a few months before the release of his debut film as director Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.

Appearing on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s podcast, the actor joked, “I’ve lost all my money on fast women and slow horses.” Asked how he decides which projects to take on and which to turn down, he said, “The most important thing is whether I’ll be able to tolerate the people who are working on it.” He added with a laugh, “But I’ve now decided that I will.” He explained, “Before marriage, I was living a carefree life. But now that I’m married, and also a director-producer, I’ve learned the importance of money.”

He said that as an actor, he was always a little childlike. “But there’s a sense of responsibility now, as a producer, as a married man. I’m not alone any more. She also has desires and needs. I’m trying to change my path now. Us jaats have always had a socialist outlook towards money, that it’s ‘wrong’ to make money, but that’s changing over time. And it’s important, because I never paid much attention to it. But now that I am, I’m sure it’ll come.”

Randeep said in an earlier interview that he sold personal property to fund his latest film, Swatatantrya Veer Savarkar, but managed to recover costs not too long afterwards. “My father had saved up and bought two or three properties for me in Mumbai, I let go of them and put the money into the movie. I couldn’t stop. This film didn’t have anybody’s support,” he told Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast. He said in an interview with Bollywood Bubble that the film eventually broke-even.  “Thankfully, we have been able to make enough money. We’ve made it back and some more. We are in plus and have managed to break even. I now joke with my dad asking him to buy more properties so that I could sell them for my next film. Agli picture mein kaam ayega (We will mortgage it when I am making my next film),” he said.
