This new horror-comedy from Aditya Sarpotdar who has just given us ‘Munjya’, the sleeper hit of 2024, takes us, once again, to a village living under the shadow of a curse. Each house in the village has two doors. The smaller one has to be left open exactly at the same time each evening by a man who lives in the house. Earlier or later won’t work, or Kakuda will come for him, and will leave a fatal mark on his back.
Sarpotdar clearly has a gift for hoovering up bizarre stories, which he parlayed quite well in ‘Munjya’ up until a point. Here, the fact that this malevolent spirit attacks only men could have turned the film into a feminist blast. But the promise lasts only up till the set-up, and then only just. As soon as it rolls over into the rest of it, ‘Kakuda’ jumps into a predictable hump, and stays there.

Newlyweds Indira (Sonakshi Sinha) and Sunny (Saqib Salim) come up against the wrath of Kakuda, leaving the latter counting down to his final day on earth. Along comes ghostbuster Victor (Riteish Deshmukh), whose equipment to bust said ghosts includes an ability to become chatty with them. There’s also Indira’s permanently morose sister (Sonakshi Sinha, in a double role) who alternates between sleepwalking and snarling.
I would like to tell you more, but there isn’t anything to report other than just plain disbelief about how films like these not only get made, but also manage to get out, kakuda-like, to plague us. This evil spirit looks a lot like the one we saw in ‘Munjya’, or was it just borrowed from the earlier film? So lacking is this one in any inspiration, you wonder if the latter was a wholesale apparition.

Sinha, who’s been doing some excellent work in her last couple of outings, slumps back into the kind of nothing movies which do nothing for her. Deshmukh, who has always managed to make the best of terrible films, can’t do anything either.
What was anyone thinking? Or were they at all?
