Sonakshi Sinha admits she is living the best life. After the success of her Netflix show Heeramandi, Sonakshi married the love of her life, Zaheer Iqbal, and now, her film Kakuda, with the newest 100 crore club entrant—Munjya director Aditya Sarpotdar—is releasing on ZEE5.

We caught up with Sonakshi as she promoted Kakuda, which also stars Ritiesh Deshmukh and her friend, actor Saqib Saleem. When asked why she returned to work so soon after tying the knot, Sonakshi told indianexpress.com, “I just got married, guys. Pata nahi aisa bhi kya kar diya maine.” When asked whether she’s not planning to take off for her honeymoon with Zaheer, she said, “Maine woh bhi kar diya. And now I am back to work, and I am loving it.”

Sonakshi Sinha’s energy is effervescent. She is excited about promoting her film Kakuda, which is a spoof horror comedy. Talking about how she is stepping out of her comfort zone for Kakuda, Sonakshi said, “Kakuda came to me and I just found it to be such a fun read. I was very entertained while reading the script. Although I don’t like horror films, there was so much humour in this film. Aditya (Sarpotdar) is someone who has understood this genre so well. I think his grasp on it is fantastic. He kind of knows where to scare people, where to make them laugh, the punches, the beats, he gets it bang on. It was a pleasure to work on a genre like this for the first time with a director like him who is so well versed with it. So, I had a blast. It was me stepping out of my comfort zone, trying out something I hadn’t done before. I’d love to do it again because it was so much fun.”

Sonakshi then shared how she didn’t take much time to sign Kakuda. “If I like something then I don’t believe in dilly-dallying and making the other person wait too much. If I am excited about something, then I am. I’ll go full on. That is what happened with this film as well.”

Sonakshi Sinha’s act as Fareedan in Heeramandi brought her a lot of praise. She is already preparing for the hit show’s second season. The actress, who also received critical acclaim for her performance in Dahaad, says she’s finally doing the kind of work she always wanted to do.

“I think it is fantastic. I am doing exactly the kind of work that I always wanted to do and it’s been a gradual process. I have done everything. I want to be an actor who filmmakers think ‘I can put this girl in any genre and cast her in any kind of film.’ Today I am open to doing any kind of film, small film, big film, action film, romantic film, whatever film. I want to be that actor who can be cast anywhere. I have tried my hand at everything, really, and I have enjoyed it. Some films have done well; some films have not. I have made my mistakes and I have learned from them. That has really made me the actor and person I am today,” said Sonakshi.

Sonakshi Sinha’s last theatrical release was Double XL with Huma Qureshi. While the film was appreciated for its topic, it fell flat at the box office. When asked if the OTT space is becoming a safe space for good storytelling and for actors like her to prove their talent, Sonakshi said, “There are good stories even in theatricals. Of course something like Heeramandi cannot come in theatres because it is a long format. But there is so much content being made and you have to put that content somewhere.”

“With the OTT boom, a lot of avenues opened for a lot of people — filmmakers, actors, writers, technicians — everybody has work and it’s a lovely platform. I have had only good experiences on these platforms and have received a lot of appreciation, so I am a big fan of it. I am an actor. At the end of the day, it is my job to act whether you put me on a theatre screen or a TV screen, or you put me on an actual theatre stage,” she added.

Sonakshi Sinha started her career with Salman Khan’s Dabangg in 2010. While she’s done several roles in her career spanning over a decade, in the last few years, she has shouldered projects by herself. When asked whether she has been consciously choosing meaty roles over mainstream glam roles, Sonakshi said, “I am open to everything. The role should excite me. It’s been a while since I shifted gears from a particular kind of film that I was doing to playing very strong female characters on screen. And I really enjoy that. It really satisfies me as a person and as an actor. So I will follow that same direction and then it depends on what roles I get to play. I’d love to do biopics. I’d love to do period films more, do all out action again. I really enjoyed doing action in Akira.”

When asked if it can be challenging for actresses and what if they end up getting less work in the mainstream, Sonakshi said, “Toh acchha hai na (It’s good then)! I would like to do big roles, important roles. It is a good thing. Akira, where I was the hero, it was like tasting blood. I never want to go back to doing two songs and four scenes in a film. So, I am enjoying this phase. Bring it on!”
