Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has made supernatural hits in the past, but remains an atheist who is skeptical about the paranormal. But one incident nearly convinced him otherwise. In a recent interview, the filmmaker recalled a mid-air interaction with choreographer Shiamak Davar, who claimed to have seen the spirit of RGV’s father aboard the flight. In the latest video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Ram Gopal Varma said that the interaction, which happened 15 days after his father’s death, left him ‘disturbed’. The filmmaker had met Shiamak only once at megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s house, and didn’t know him much at all.

On the flight, Ram Gopal Varma said that Shiamak was sitting somewhere behind him, so he went and sat next to him and the two started talking. “The plane took off, and then, in day light, mid-air, he suddenly asked me, ‘Your father passed away?’ It was an usual question to ask, but it was true,” he said.

“Fifteen days before this encounter, my father had passed away. So I told him yes. Now, he was on the window seat, and I was in the aisle. He then looked at me for a while, and said, ‘He is here with us.’ I was completely taken aback! And he is a choreographer, I expect such questions from a guy who does some weird…”

The filmmaker told Shiamak that he doesn’t “believe in this stuff,” only for the choreographer to look behind Ram Gopal Varma again, and say, “‘He says he also never believed in it and is very concerned about you.’ How does he know my father died? That he was an atheist? I had a mixture of emotions, helplessness, anger, fear. I was very disturbed by that conversation. I suddenly got up and went back to my seat. And I started thinking, ‘How can he know?'”

RGV contemplated all the rational explanations, but drew a blank. “Now, there are possibilities. Either his father is dead or not, atheist or not, so the odds are not so great that you can’t luck on it. I also thought since both of us are from the film industry, he might have overheard this and is playing googly!” the filmmaker concluded.

In his career of over 30 years, Ram Gopal Varma had made several supernatural thrillers, including Raat, Bhoot, Darna Zaroori Hai, Phoonk and Bhoot Returns. He currently features in a special appearance in Prabhas-led sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD.
