Actor Kartik Aaryan recently graced Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show with his mother Mala Tiwari. On the show, Mala shared some memories from the time Kartik was attending engineering college in Mumbai and was still trying to be an actor.

Mala shared that Kartik used to fail his engineering exams and would give excuses that he failed because he was unwell, but in reality he was giving auditions for films. At the time he had not informed his parents that he was trying his luck in acting. She told Kapil, “He had a craze, he was very passionate from childhood but he never told us about it.”

When asked when did Kartik inform them that he was inclined to acting, she said, “When he got Pyaar Ka Punchnama. After he had cracked it. At the time I used to think that he has gone to (Mumbai) to study but he would get ATKT (allowed to keep term). He was failing and getting ATKTs and when I would ask him why, he’d say, ‘Mummy main bimaar ho gaya tha (Mummy, I had fallen ill).’ This happened a couple of times.”

Mala Tiwari then shared the moment Kartik Aaryan finally told her the truth. She shared, “Then one day he phoned me and he was crying. He said, ‘Mummy mujhe mil gaya (Mummy, I got it). I cracked the audition. Mujhe picture mil gayi (I got the film).’ He was crying and I was crying, so he asked me why I was crying. So I said, ‘I am crying because you got the picture, I wanted you to study and become a doctor.’ I never wanted it (acting career)… I wanted him to become a doctor or an engineer.”

When Kapil Sharma told her that he is already an engineer, she responded by saying, “Engineer toh thok peet ke banaya hai (We made him an engineer with a lot of effort). He was getting ATKT in every semester, so I took him to his college principal and told him, ‘Sir please make him understand how important education is, at least he should get a degree.’ So he explained to him, and he completed the four year course in 8-10 years.” Kartik chimed, “No, in five years!”, and Mala retorted, “I gave up all my work and would come to Mumbai to teach him.”

Mala Tiwari then shared how, at one instance, when she asked Kartik what he wrote in his exams, he told her that he wrote the story of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. “I think he was shooting for Aakash Vani around that time. He had bought a third hand car. He would drive to work from DY Patil. I would sit next to him and make him study and used to tell him, ‘Beta, yeh important hai, yeh important hai,’ and then I would sit outside for three hours when he used to write his paper. When I would ask him what he wrote in the paper, he told me, ‘Main Aakash Vani ki story likh ke aayaa hoon.'” Kartik was quick to add, “It was Punchnama 2’s story!”

Mala also said that she accepted that Kartik made the right decision by taking up acting “after a very long time”.

Kartik Aaryan made his acting debut with Luv Ranjan’s buddy film Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011) while pursuing a degree in engineering. He was last seen in Kabir Khan’s Chandu Champion, a biographical sports drama film on India’s first Paralympics gold medallist Murlikant Petkar. He is now shooting for Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 along with Tripti Dimri and Vidya Balan.
