Actor Shabana Azmi worked with filmmaker Mira Nair on The Reluctant Fundamentalist, in which she played a small role among a large ensemble cast that included Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber, Kate Hudson and Keifer Sutherland. She said in a recent interaction with Mira that she’s still waiting to be cast in a major role in one of her films, as they recalled the humorous manner in which the actor once approached her for a role.

Speaking at the New York Indian Film Festival, Mira asked Shabana to list the most memorable directors that she has worked with in her five-decade career. Shabana said, “I have a grouse with a director who I’ve been talking to for several years, saying that we should work together. And finally, she gives me a tiny role that doesn’t do justice to our relationship or her faith in me, and that woman is sitting next to me.”

With a laugh, Mira said, “One of the earliest times I met Shabana was when she chased me into a women’s room in a five-star hotel in Juhu, and said, ‘What does Rekha have that I don’t have?’ Humari pyaar ki ladayi hui in that ladies room.” She told Shabana that she knew that the part in The Reluctant Fundamentalist was tiny, but assured her that they will work together again. Mira worked with Rekha on the film Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.

In the past, Shabana has confessed that she was highly competitive with her contemporaries, and admitted that she might have treated some of them unfairly. She told News18 that she made some ‘uncharitable’ comments about Smita Patil in the past, which she regrets. “It (rivalry) was not fictitious, there were some basis to it, and then it was exaggerated, but I feel that I did say some uncharitable things about her which I regret. I shouldn’t have, but for me what’s very important is that I had a very good relationship with Smita Patil’s parents, with her sisters and now with Prateik (Smita Patil’s son),” she said.
