Diljit Dosanjh is easily the number one musical artist in India at the moment and his concerts around the globe are selling to packed houses. But, for Diljit, making money isn’t the most important thing in the world anymore. In a recent chat, Diljit was asked about giving his song ‘Lover’ to Karan Johar for his film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani without charging him any money for it and Diljit simply said, “If he would have paid me, how much richer would I have gotten?”

Talking to Sucharita Tyagi for her YouTube channel, when asked if Diljit was such good friends with Karan that he gave away the song for free, the ‘GOAT’ singer said, “I am not friends with anyone as such. If I have worked with someone once and they need something, if I can’t help them then what is the point? If I was a doctor then I would have done his surgery for free (laughs).”

He said that people often do things for each other and said, “If one of my music producer friends does a song for me, then I sing a song for them. The only thing that matters is, what can you do for someone you already know? That’s all there is. There is nothing like I gave it for free.”

He then said that even if Karan paid him for the song, it wouldn’t have made too much of a difference. He said, “Ya voh mereko paise de dete, main kitna ameer ho jata? Unke chalo mann mein aaya yeh achi baat hai. Lekin unko bhi paise ki kami nahi hai aur mujhe bhi koi aisi zyada zarurat nahi hai toh isliye maine kaha ki aap le lo, use kar lo, koi baat nahi (If he paid me, how much richer would I have gotten? He thought about it, that’s a good thing. But he isn’t short of money and I also don’t need much so I said take it, use it.)”

In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, ‘Lover’ plays in the background at the interval moment when Rocky and Rani’s characters are walking towards each other’s families as they change residences. Karan Johar, in an earlier chat with the same channel, had shared that he “really wanted the interval point to be ‘Lover'” but was told that the song was “ridiculously expensive.” So Karan called Diljit and asked “Paaji, mujhe yeh gaana chahiye (Brother, I want this song).” Karan recalled Diljit’s response to his request and said, “He said ‘Aap puch kyu rahe ho? Yeh haq banta hai aapka (Why are you asking? It’s your right)’.”

Diljit has previously worked as an actor in Karan Johar-produced film Good Newwz.
