Although the ensuing Sankranthi/Pongal weekend is poised for a clash of the titans, featuring numerous substantial South Indian movies releasing simultaneously, the anticipation for Sriram Raghavan’s thriller film Merry Christmas appears undeterred by any competing projects.

Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Katrina Kaif, Ashwini Kalsekar, and Radhika Apte in key roles, the film’s trailer underscored that Merry Christmas would encapsulate everything one expects and more from the filmmaker.

Now, Tamil filmmaker and actor Nayanthara’s husband Vignesh Shivan has dropped the first review of Merry Christmas, further fueling excitement surrounding the film. Vignesh, who seems to have watched a preview of the film, took to Instagram on Wednesday to shower praise on director Sriram Raghavan and actors Sethupathi and Katrina.

“Absolutely awestruck by the outstanding performances from Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif in this superbly written thrilling screenplay from the genius Sriram Raghavan which takes us back to the Alfred Hitchcock times,” the filmmaker noted.

“Pritam’s music is another major pillar. The last 30 minutes is just tooo good! Enjoy it in theatres from Jan 12th! Totally proud of you makkal selvan Vijay Sethupathi! You jus held it all together with effortless ease,” he added.

While the Hindi version additionally boasts talents like Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan and Tinnu Anand, the Tamil version has stalwarts like Radhika Sarathkumar, Shanmugaraja, Kavin Jay Babu, and Rajesh Williams. Radhika Apte and Ashwini Kalsekar have special cameos in both versions.

Bankrolled by Ramesh Taurani, Sanjay Routray, Jaya Taurani and Kewal Garg, Merry Christmas is penned by Varun Grover. While its cinematography is handled by Madhu Neelakandan, Pooja Ladha Surti is the editor of the movie, which will hit the screens on January 12, 2024, in both Hindi and Tamil.
