Mexican actor and singer Adan Canto, best known for his roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Agent Game, as well as the TV series The Cleaning Lady, passed away at the age of 42 on Monday.

Publicist Jennifer Allen told The Associated Press that Canto died of appendiceal cancer and had opted to keep his diagnosis private. “Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever. He will be greatly missed by so many,” Allen wrote in a statement.

Born on December 5, 1981, in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, Adan Canto grew up in Del Rio, Texas, and pursued an early career in music, Variety reported. He wrote songs for several Mexican TV shows and films and eventually landed on stage in an adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s All About My Mother. His first TV role was on Estado de Gracia in 2009. Fez Noriega’s Te presento a Laura was his first film.

He made his American debut in Kevin Williamson’s crime thriller series The Following (2013), headlined by Kevin Bacon. His notable roles included Vice President-elect Aaron Shore in Designated Survivor, Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla in Narcos and the mutant Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the AP report stated further, adding Canto also starred in Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised, as well as Agent Game. In 2013, the actor started his own production company named Canto House Pictures.

Adan Canto was starring as Armand Morales on Fox’s The Cleaning Lady at the time of his death, which is currently filming its third season. He was unable to participate in the production due to his illness but was hoping to rejoin later in the season.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Adan Canto. A wonderful actor and dear friend, we were honoured to have him as part of the Warner Bros Television and Fox Entertainment families since his US debut in The Following more than a decade ago. Most recently, he lit up the screen in ‘The Cleaning Lady’ with a powerful performance that showcased his artistry, range, depth and vulnerability. This is an unfathomable loss, and we grieve alongside his wife Stephanie, their children and loved ones. We will miss Adan dearly,” Warner Bros Television and Fox Entertainment said in a joint statement, Variety reported.

Upon learning about Adan Canto’s demise, his Designated Survivor co-star Kiefer Sutherland shared on Instagram a picture of them together and noted, “It seems lately I have had to make too many posts like this one, but I am heartbroken by the loss of Adan Canto. He was such a wonderful spirit. As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed. I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children. Adan, may you rest in peace.”

Canto is survived by his wife Stephanie Ann Canto and two children, Roman Alder, 3, and Eve Josephine, 18 months. “Forever my treasure Adan, see you soon,” his wife wrote on her Instagram account. Quoting Matthew 6:19-21 from the Bible, Stephanie shared a heartening picture of herself with Canto and wrote, “Forever my treasure, Adan. See you soon 💔.”
