Actor Imran Khan, who recently returned to public life after several years spent in a self-imposed hiatus, spoke about why his marriage crumbled during that time. Imran was married to his childhood sweetheart Avantika Malik. They separated in 2019 and have been legally divorced for ‘a couple of years’, he said recently. In a new interview, the actor admitted that his mental illnesses affected his marriage.
Imran has been vocal about his struggle with depression, and said that he first took stock of the situation after the release of his final film, 2015’s Katti Batti. He subsequently decided to step back from the film industry and its trappings, and resurfaced on social media some months ago following an outpouring of support and love from his fans. Chatting with India Today, Imran said that he wouldn’t want to go into too much detail about his divorce, but provided some insight into what happened.

“I’m hesitant to add a lot of fuel to the gossip fire, but as I was dealing with all of this baggage and my internal struggle, I did find that my marriage and my relationship were not helping any of that,” he said, adding, “In an ideal, healthy dynamic between two people, you are both making each other better, healthier, stronger, and supporting each other to be the healthiest, best, strongest version. We were not in that place.”
Imran and Avantika tied the knot in 2011, and have a 10-year-old daughter, Imara. In separate interviews, he opened up about sharing custody with his ex-wife, and said that he tries to be present for his daughter on the days that she lives with him. “Thursday to Sunday, I don’t take on any work because those are the days when I have my daughter with me. Because I have to take her to school, get her ready, be there and do all these things, I don’t take on work from Thursday to Sunday. I only take on work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. If I start shooting for something, it’s going to go for a toss, but woh kal dekha jayega (I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it),” he told Zoom Entertainment.
“I and Avantika are legally divorced. Papers are signed. It’s been a couple of years now. Again, I just didn’t consider that it was anyone’s business to speak of,” he told Hindustan Times. Imran is now dating Lekha Washington. He is also actively contemplating an acting comeback, and is considering projects.
