Veteran actor Dharmendra might not be known for his dancing skills, but he managed to create his own signature style. His hook step from “Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana” continues to be memorable despite the actor confessing multiple times that he is not a good dancer. While many  actors, over the decades, have tried to emulate his signature steps on stage and in films, it was Hema Malini, his wife and co-star in the film Pratigya, who made it memorable.

Several clips from the episode, where Hema was invited as a special guest, were shared on social media where she can be seen speaking about how she asked Dharmendra why he danced a certain way while copying his hand gestures from their song, Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana. “Aap aise aise kyun karte hain? (Why do you dance this way?” she was heard saying while speaking of Dharmendra.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini

In a video, shared by Sony Television, Hema and Shilpa got onto the stage to perform on the song. The duo improvised a few steps while Hema got into Dharmendra’s character and recreated the famous hook step as Shilpa performed Hema’s steps from the song. Their performance won the audience’s hearts with co-judge Geeta Kapur giving them a standing ovation and hooting for them. Following their performance, Shilpa fell on Hema’s feet.

Dharmendra in a still from “Deewangi Deewangi”

Om Shanti Om director Farah Khan once spoke about Dharmendra’s performance in the title track “Deewangi Deewangi”, revealing that Salman Khan, who along with a bevvy of stars feature in the song, actually waited four hours in Shah Rukh Khan’s vanity because he wanted to watch Dharmendra perform. Talking on the YouTube channel of IFTDA Official, Farah recalled, “There is a shot where Dharam ji is dancing, and Salman and others jump in. That wasn’t planned. They were standing behind the camera because they waited for four hours in Shah Rukh’s van to watch Dharam ji’s shot. And while Dharam ji was dancing, they just jumped into the shot.”
