Actor Shekhar Suman didn’t mince his words as he spoke about the ruthless nature of big cities, particularly Mumbai, where he lives. In an interview, he said that his heart still belongs to Patna, where he hails from, but because of the requirements and necessities of his profession, he has to be in Mumbai. Shekhar described the inhabitants of Mumbai as ‘animals’, and compared the city to a ‘lawless jungle’.

Appearing on the Inconversation with Ishan YouTube channel, Shekhar was asked about the differences between a town like Lucknow, and a big city like Mumbai. He said, “Yeh sheher thodi hai? Yeh jungle hai. Yahan insaan nahi baste. Yahan sab khaufnaak log hain. Yeh ab robots ban gaye hain, AI-created robots hain. Yeh log buut hain, sab patthar hain, aur jo hain, waise unka dil bhi hai, rooh bhi hai. Jungle mein hi sab bhatak rahe hain, koi kayda-kanoon toh hai nahi. Yeh sab sirfire log, inko kya kaha jaaye. Inko insaan kehne mein sharm aati hai (This isn’t a city, it’s a jungle. People don’t live here. They’re all terrifying. They’ve become robots, they’re clones, they’re inanimate objects. And that’s how their hearts and souls are as well. They’re all lost in the jungle, it’s complete lawlessness here. They’re all out of their minds, I feel ashamed to call them human beings).”

But, Shekhar admitted, he has no choice but to live among them. “One has to find their safe corner, their nook, a little shade under the tree, and connect themselves to nature. One must remain as disconnected from this jungle as possible, as disconnected from these monsters. That is the only way they can attain peace,” he said.

The actor has been living in Mumbai from the 1980s, when he moved to the city and found an acting job within 15 days of showing up. He tasted the peak of success in the 1990s and early 2000s, as a fixture on television. Most recently, he appeared in the big-budget Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, created and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
