Ghilli has created quite a stir in the Tamil film industry, which is going through a rough patch. Since the start of 2024, Kollywood has been struggling to produce consistent hits. However, the re-release of Vijay-starrer Ghilli, which was first released in 2004, has brought hope back to the industry. The film has earned about Rs 20 crore in a matter of four days. It has given hope to many commercial filmmakers like director Hari.
For the promotion of his upcoming film Rathnam, which is hitting screens on April 26, the director was on a tour across Tamil Nadu. He had visited several theatres across the state and witnessed the incredible reception Ghilli received. Hari claimed that there are a lot of different kinds of audiences but not everyone demands novelty all the time. He told Galatta Plus, “There are creative audiences who like to get new content. They want something different from the things that are out there. That’s why films like Ayothi and Dada work for them well. Then there is the kind of audience who don’t mind anything. They want to celebrate the film if it is fun. To them it doesn’t matter if it is a 20-year-old Ghilli or a new film.”
He added, “I was on a tour during the release of Ghilli across the state. I saw it in many theatres. Aiyo! The kind of response the film is receiving is incredible. Director Dharani is my friend. I congratulate him. I was proud of the film. I have started to respect the audience more. I have gotten more hopeful about cinema as well. I am in full charge. After the release of Rathnam, I will sit down and do stories with full courage.”
The director then opened up about the current state of the Tamil film industry where the frequency of films has become less. He agreed that the problem is with big heroes who act in one film in a year. “My philosophy is to produce a lot with a minimum profit margin. Producers and stars want to do just one film with a high profit margin, but because of this, theatre owners are affected. I spoke to many theatre owners during the tour and all of them claim that we need more releases. They claim since films are delayed and there are no releases, even a flop leads to a huge loss. However, if there are many films, even if one fails, another one will succeed. So, my opinion is that big stars should at least do two films in a year. A big change is on the horizon soon.”
