After a triumphant theatrical run lasting over 40 days, during which it garnered critical and commercial success, Jeo Baby’s Kaathal – The Core, starring Mammootty and Jyotika in the lead roles, had its streaming premiere early on Friday morning.
One of the few low-budget films to create a significant impact nationwide, Kaathal, which hit the screens on November 23, revolves around a middle-aged homosexual man (Mammootty), still in the closet, his wife (Jyotika) and his lover (Sudhi Kozhikode). The film also delves into the challenges of leading a concealed life, going beyond the typical tropes often employed in such narratives.
Kaathal – The Core is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The streaming giant described the movie on social media as, “Political ambitions, personal revelations, and a riveting tale of self-discovery.”
The movie had also earned a place in The Indian Express’ lists of the best Malayalam movies and Indian movies of 2023, alongside Mammootty’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. Mammootty’s performances in both films also bagged him a spot in our list of 11 Malayalam actors who excelled in unconventional roles in 2023.

The film premiered at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the Indian Panorama section and the 28th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in the Malayalam Cinema Today section.
In our review of the movie, we wrote, “Kaathal – The Core is a groundbreaking film that should be watched by all, particularly those in the film industry who continue to present recycled age-old narratives, expecting unquestioning acceptance from the audiences.”
Dissecting the movie in his Post Credits Scene column, The Indian Express’ Rohan Naahar wrote, “By testing the audience’s capacity for unabashed idealism in its final moments, Jeo Baby’s phenomenal new film undermines its own achievements.”
