Shark Tank’s Vineeta Singh added her two cents about the controversial film Animal, and said that while she generally supports the exploration of dark themes in cinema, she felt that the film’s protagonist wasn’t adequately punished for his bad behaviour. In a new interview, she said that she had similar feelings about the film Kabir Singh, also directed by Animal’s Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

Vineeta, the CEO of Sugar Cosmetics, became a household name after appearing on the first season of Shark Tank India. On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast recently, she was asked about Animal, and she said, “I broadly agree that art is art, and when a fictional character is created, regardless of whether he’s played by Ranbir Kapoor or Shakti Kapoor, he’s still a fictional character. Hollywood makes such films regularly, look at Quentin Tarantino’s films. I was arguing with my friends about Kabir Singh and Animal… The only thing I agree with is this: in India, we’ve seen for so many years, bad guys lose in the end; they get what they deserve. The good guy always wins.”

She continued, “I feel the real problem with both these films, Kabir Singh and Animal, is that the toxic protagonists get away with it in the end. In India, we need that closure, we need to see the karma. We’ve grown up on the Mahabharata, this is what we believe in. Unfortunately, both these movies allow their extremely negative characters to get away with it. They’re beautifully shot, but… They aren’t made to suffer the consequences of their actions. Look at Shah Rukh Khan, he played so many dark characters, but it wasn’t the same, was it? He wasn’t celebrated. This is a small difference, but it’s relevant in India. In Hollywood, they can get away with open endings because the audience is nuanced.”

In post-release interviews, Vanga has repeatedly lashed out at the film’s critics, and suggested that there is a conspiracy to bring him down. “If everybody is going to focus just on the morality, we should stop making films. Let’s just make cartoons,” he said in an interview with Connect FM Canada. Also starring Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Triptii Dimri and others, Animal has grossed nearly Rs 900 crore worldwide, and is the third-biggest Indian blockbuster of 2023, behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan. It is also the biggest A-rated film in history, and the biggest hit of Ranbir Kapoor’s career.
