Renowned classical dancer and actor Thara Kalyan is a beloved figure among Malayalees, especially after she entered the realm of social media and began offering glimpses into her personal and professional life to her adoring fans.

Now, her daughter Sowbhagya Venkitesh has disclosed that her mother has completely lost her voice, albeit temporarily. In a video Thara shared on her YouTube channel recently, Sowbhagya was seen saying that her mother lost her voice due to a health condition called spasmodic dysphonia, which is a voice disorder. Mentioning that Thara underwent surgery recently, Sowbhagya added that her voice would return only after three weeks.

Thara Kalyan has been facing the condition, which has been causing her to lose her voice gradually, for the past several years. Two years ago, she also underwent a thyroid surgery. “At first, it was thought that mom’s loss of voice was due to thyroid goitre. The problem was that the goitre had grown inwards, and we thought that she lost her voice when it hit the soundbox. She has also been teaching children by using her voice for many years,” Sowbhagya Venkitesh narrated.

“Voice loss is also common among teachers who have to work with great strain on their voice. Then too, I thought that was the reason. But it was only later that she was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia,” she said.

“One way out of this situation was Botox. My grandmother (Thara’s mother) passed away while mom had undergone that. After the Botox, she needed complete rest, and it was difficult for her to even drink water. But she could not rest at all as it was impossible not to talk to those who came to know about grandma’s death. After exerting more strain and speaking again, this condition returned with greater force than before. And the stress of that time brought the disease back. The only option then was surgery, and mom finally underwent it recently,” Sowbhagya added.

Though it is expected that Thara Kalyan would get back her voice after three weeks, it will be a slightly different one. Sowbhagya mentioned that Thara will not be able to sing at all from now on, and the doctors have advised her not to speak in a high-pitched voice.
