Though Nag Ashwin’s epic mythological-science fiction dystopian film Kalki 2898 AD is still in production with no official updates on its release date, discussions have already started among people about the potential for sequels or the movie being part of a new cinematic universe.

At a time when most big-budget films and their makers plan projects in this manner to heighten anticipation and maximise profits, there is speculation that Kalki too may follow a similar trajectory, given its status as one of the most anticipated movies of recent times.

Meanwhile, director Nag Ashwin was recently posed with this question while participating in IIT Bombay’s Tech Fest ’23. However, he opted not to directly address it at the moment. When asked about the potential for sequels, Ashwin asserted that audiences will likely receive clarity when Team Kalki announces the release date and other details about the movie. Nevertheless, the fact that he did not deny such speculations has intensified the excitement surrounding the project.

He also clarified that there are currently no plans to create a cinematic universe around the project. Ashwin emphasised that he is treating Kalki as a standalone film at the moment, focusing entirely on it without exploring other horizons.

When asked whether Kalki could be India’s Star Wars, Nag Ashwin expressed his desire for it to be recognised as “India’s Kalki”, underscoring that he is not attempting to replicate anything.

Discussing the technical aspects of Kalki, especially the visual effects, Ashwin shared that he and the film’s team are putting in significant effort to ensure maximum quality. “I hope it all works out and looks good. Creating a VFX-heavy movie in India is undoubtedly challenging, but I believe things are improving, and we are getting closer to achieving our vision,” he observed.

Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in key roles, the film is bankrolled by C Aswani Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies, and its music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.
