One of the most anticipated projects of 2024, Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is reported to be a one-of-a-kind epic mythological-science fiction dystopian film. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in key roles, the film is bankrolled by C Aswani Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies, and its music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

Meanwhile, director Nag Ashwin recently opened up about the movie and shared several details regarding Kalki’s futuristic world while participating in IIT Bombay’s Tech Fest ’23. When questioned about the possibility of an interplanetary storyline, Ashwin emphatically clarified that the entire narrative unfolds completely on Earth.

When asked about the reason behind naming the central character and the film Kalki, believed to be the 10th and final incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, Ashwin noted that he went with it because it’s a powerful name. “It is something connected to our present and past. That’s what the story is,” he added. In Hindu scriptures, Kalki is envisioned as the figure destined to bring an end to the Kali Yuga, one of the four stages in the cyclical nature of existence in Vaishnava cosmology.

Delving into the integration of mythology into a dystopian sci-fi narrative, Ashwin expressed enthusiasm, describing the process as interesting and enjoyable. “It’s interesting and a lot of fun to put together. About Ramayana and Mahabharata, we constantly say how the weapons mentioned in them were so powerful and how they were derived from some force of nature. They were described very well. If you read them, they all feel like technology. So, what I have done is mix that with what we understand as modern weapons. It’s fun and interesting,” he added.

Previously, Prabhas’ Baahubali co-star Rana Daggubati had heaped praise on the project and shared that he felt quite envious of Ashwin for bringing to life a project that he had always dreamt of.

“When I walked into the set, I was like, ‘Sh*t, he’s making this. Like he’s making everything that I dreamt of.’ And I remember I didn’t talk to him that day. I went back home and I called him and said, ‘Dude, I’m really jealous. I don’t know why.’ And he said, ‘Dude, only when you’re jealous I know I’m doing the right things.’ And it’s a story from mythology into science fiction. I’m very excited about what that film will do. It’s got the biggest star cast. It’s got everything,” he said in an interview with Film Companion.
