Indian film awards are known for their star performances and complete lack of credibility. Announcements of each set of awards have their own vociferous set of critics and the awards this year have been no different.

As the News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 were announced in Mumbai on Saturday, many were taken aback by some of the choices. However, the acceptance speech of Varun Dhawan, awarded Best Actor award for the controversial Bawaal, is now going viral as the actor himself sounds a little surprised. Varun defeated Ranbir Kapoor (Animal) and Sunny Deol (Gadar 2), among others, to clinch the award.

“When the nominations were announced, Bhushan ji very sweetly told me, tumhi jeet rahe ho isiliye toh aae ho (of course you are winning the award, that’s why you showed up),” Varun said in his speech as the audience laughed. Emcees for the evening, Neha Dhupia and Aparshakti Khurana, called it a Bawaal speech and urged him not to disclose more ‘secrets’.

Since the award was based on voting, Varun said he could not believe that he would receive it when nominated in the same category as Salman Khan and Sunny Deol. “My vote would go to them,” he said.

this is the most brutally honest award acceptance speech. I cannot believe Varun Dhawan said all of this on stage, it’s good that he called out and was self-aware about this.

Addressing the criticism Bawaal received on release, Varun said that the film remained special in his career. “When it was released, it was met with a lot of controversy and people had a mixed response to whether it was politically correct or not correct. But ass the year has ended, it was the most watched film on OTT. We won a lot of awards, various people loved the movie… obviously people have a lot of views. Since the dust has cleared, we know the movie has stood the test of time. I think that is what a great movie, one that stands the test of time. It has been a while since Bawaal released, so I am also surprised that I am getting this award now.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-starring Janhvi Kapoor, Bawaal was criticised for conflating a couple’s marital discord with the Holocaust, with a scene set at the Auschwitz concentration camp. The film showed the couple visiting Germany and other European countries where they realise parallels between their issues and the sufferings of Jews under Nazi Germany.
