Zeenat Aman was a favourite of the masses when she first gained fame as a movie star and decades later, when a new generation discovered her via social media, Zeenat made a comeback in a unique style. So a few days ago, when it was announced that actor Payal Ghosh would be playing her in a movie called Shaq: The Doubt, it was met with some skepticism. Now, Zeenat has expressed her disapproval, calling the decision to make a biopic on her life without involving her “foolish.”

“You may dismiss this as the ranting of an old lady, but in my opinion, it would be foolish to make a biopic about me without actually involving me,” she wrote, alongside a black and white picture featuring herself.

She went on to say that nobody knows her life better than herself and to make a film on her life without her input would not make much sense. “Quite frankly, nobody knows me like I do —  so any research to this end would be incomplete, even flawed, without my input. I’d wager that for every factoid about me that’s available in the public domain, there are a hundred more that are known just to me. There are a trove of milestones, anecdotes and personal revelations that are integral to understanding my journey. Oh, it’s been an interesting life indeed,” read an excerpt from her post.

Zeenat, who doesn’t mince her words and always speaks her mind, said she is “wary of her story being told by strangers, especially men” who can stereotype her. “The ‘sex symbol’ tag is impossible to shake (believe me, it’s been 50 years) and in the hands of the wrong storyteller may well devolve into a work of crass voyeurism and conjecture. I’m only too aware of the stereotyping of ‘bold women’,” she lamented in her post.

Addressing the news of a probable film being made on her personal and professional life, Zeenat said that a great team is a necessity.  “I am neither a seductress, nor a damsel in distress. And I am certainly not a victim. There have been conversations about a potential series or films, and I’m slowly warming to the idea. Will it happen? Who knows. It would take a sensitive director, a brave writer, an immaculate cast… not to mention, a producer who will — to steal a quote — show me the money!” she emphasised.

In an earlier chat with Deccan Chronicle, Payal said that she was quite thrilled to get the part. “Getting to play Zeenatji on screen is something I never expected. It’s one of the biggest opportunities an actor of today can get,” she said and added, “I met her a few years ago and came to know several things about her. I am looking forward to meeting her again and getting to know more about her personality.”
