In contrast to the typical practice in cinema, where playback singers are selected on the basis of how similar their voices are to those of the actors in the song sequences, such rules don’t apply to singer Udit Narayan. One of the few Indian playback singers whose enchanting voice can transport listeners to another realm, Narayan has been a favourite among Bollywood composers, and has lent his voice to almost all big actors, including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

At the recent pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, the 68-year-old singer once again showcased his legendary talent by performing some of his most cherished tracks for the audience. The impact of his concert on attendees was so powerful that even Bollywood’s Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan were spotted dancing to Narayan’s heartening rendition of the song “Main Yahaan Hoon” from SRK’s widely acclaimed movie Veer-Zaara (2004).

Country ke sabse bade, richest person Mukesh Ambani ji ke bete ki pre wedding hai (It was the pre-wedding event of India’s biggest and richest person Mukesh Ambani’s son). I performed on Sunday, it was a 20 minute performance. Pritam Chakraborty ji ne coordinate kiya hum musicians ke saath (Music composer Pritam Chakraborty coordinated the performance with us singers). There were many others apart from me, mujhe bhi pehli baar mauka mila hai (this was my first opportunity),” Narayan told Hindustan Times about his concert.

For the occasion, Narayan had prepared a setlist of five of his most iconic songs, which were “Pehla Nasha” from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, “Main Yahaan Hoon”, “Udd Jaa Kaale Kawaan” from Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, “Chand Chupa Badal Mein” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and “Jaadu Teri Nazar” from Darr.

Itne bade log the, toh mahaul toh achha hoga hi. Mujhe bhi opportunity mili hai. Anant Ambani ji bauhaut pyaar karte hain humse, maine suna hai (There were such influential people, so the atmosphere had to be good. I was also given an opportunity. I’ve heard that Anant Ambani really loves me),” he added.
