The Malayalam film industry is wrapping up February with three consecutive superhit movies: Girish AD’s Naslen, Mamitha Baiju-starrer Premalu, Rahul Sadasivan’s Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam and Chidambaram’s Soubin Shahir and Sreenath Bhasi-starrer Manjummel Boys, all of which have garnered nationwide acclaim. Despite it being only two months into 2024, the industry is already performing exceptionally well, hinting at a potentially strong year ahead.

One of the most anticipated Malayalam films of the year is Blessy’s survival drama Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role. Adapted from the 2008 hit Malayalam novel of the same name by Benyamin, the film has been in development since 2009. Scheduled for release on March 28, Aadujeevitham features an impressive technical team too, including Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, cinematographer Sunil KS and editor A Sreekar Prasad.

Meanwhile, Rahman recently dubbed Aadujeevitham as “Malayalam’s Lawrence of Arabia”, further elevating the hype surrounding the movie. Speaking at an event organised to launch the film’s official website, Rahman praised the efforts of the film’s crew. “Mr Blessy and team have made a Malayalam Lawrence of Arabia,” he noted.

“I am coming back to Malayalam cinema after Yoddha (1992). I did a small movie (Malayankunju) with Fahadh Faasil before. But this is truly a composer’s film as there are so many emotions to convey through music. I feel honoured to work with Blessy, Benyamin, Prithviraj and the whole team. They have all given their soul to the movie. Looking at them reaffirms my faith in cinema,” he added.

During the seventh edition of the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) in Kozhikode recently, Blessy shared that he must have read the novel Aadujeevitham more times than Benyamin himself.

He emphasised the book’s significant impact on readers over the years. The director highlighted the initial challenge he faced during filming, which involved sourcing an adequate number of Arabian goats, stressing the importance of accurately representing the species. “It is very important to get the species right. Our goats are different from breeds like Awassi,” he observed.
