Somewhere buried underneath the dominant loud chatter, haphazard storytelling and a convoluted plot, there is perhaps a beating heart that wants to encourage women to pursue their dreams and men to support them wholeheartedly. But that heart gets overshadowed by the hotpotch manner in which this story unfolds.

In case you have not guessed from the title already, the whole film revolves around a young couple having a baby — a waaris (heir) for the owner of a century-old sweet shop. Anupam Kher plays the patriarch who desperately wants Heer Chawla (Guru Randhawa) to get married and have a baby as soon as possible. Heer is head over heels in love with Iraa Mishra (Saiee Manjrekar), whose primary goal in life is to become an IAS officer. However, Iraa is under pressure from her family to get married. Heer promises to help her and facilitate her preparation for the examination even after they get married.

Once they are married, all that the supporting characters can talk about is when Iraa is getting pregnant. The story becomes progressively confusing and long-drawn as Iraa initially pretends to be pregnant, then pretends to lose the baby and then tries to conceive. Even though one’s mind is exhausted by these logic-defying twists and turns, one wonders why is it so difficult to attempt a massy comedy without the story being riddled with age-old tropes, banality and overdose of emotional manipulations.

After spending most of its 125-minute runtime on building and maintaining familial pressure about getting a progeny, the film tries to make some amends towards the end. That’s too little and too late. There are mentions of family members caring for each other selflessly and finding love being more important than having babies. But the film makes the mistake of telling rather than showing them. It also relies too much on caricaturish characters and stereotypes to get the laughs.

The film would have been an effective vehicle to launch singer Randhawa and Manjrekar as actors had the writers added depth to the characters and had a better understanding about male allyship.
