Bhumi Pednekar is currently basking in the applause for her stellar performance in Netflix’s Bhakshak. In the film, she plays an investigative journalist who uncovers the sexual abuse of young children at a shelter home. The movie, based on true events, has garnered international acclaim, ranking among the top five non-English films on the streaming platform. However, for Bhumi, the sweetest reward came from her mother, Sumitra Hooda Pednekar, in the form of a unique tradition — a gold coin.

Taking to Instagram, Bhumi shared a picture with her mother and revealed this heartwarming custom. “Mummy gives a gold coin every time she feels I’ve grown as an actor,” the actor wrote, continuing, “After watching Bhakshak, I remember how overwhelmed my mom got and I somewhere knew I had another one coming my way.”

Directed by Pulkik and also starring Sanjay Mishra, Sai Tamhankar, and Aditya Srivastava, Bhakshak is inspired by real-life events and has been produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma for Red Chillies Entertainment.

The Pati Patni Aur Woh actor recounted their silent car ride home after the screening of the movie, followed by an emotional conversation. “I remember the ride back home. No one spoke. Once we were home, Samiksha started talking to me and there were just tears rolling down her eyes. She said – This film is beyond what it does for you, it’s about what it does for those children. We can’t fail them again. Today I have 7 coins from mom :) There is no award greater than the one that I get from my family,” wrote Bhumi in the emotional note.

Besides being her biggest cheerleader, Bhumi Pednekar says her mother is her fiercest critic. So when her mother truly loves a performance, her gesture speaks volumes.

Talking about her personal experience of working on Bhakshak, the actor, in an interview with PTI, had said, “I really hope the film impacts audiences, where you kind of question your decisions. It made me question my empathy and how I had become so numb towards somebody else’s pain.”
