In the 1960s and 1970s, Dharmendra was known for his on-screen action hero avatar. But Dharmendra was also a short tempered man, so his reel-life personality would sometimes bleed into his real-life as well. During a recent interview, Johnny Lever recalled an anecdote about Dharmendra actually whacking a man who was annoying him in a lift.

In a chat with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, Johnny recalled, “Dharmendra is a daring man. He is exactly what he is the movies. He is not scared of anyone. He is great person, very down to earth, but when he loses it, he doesn’t think much. There was this incident… this person was going in an elevator and Dharam paaji was in the same lift. That person kept repeating ‘Is this Dharmendra? Doesn’t look like him. I don’t believe he is Dharmendra’. Dharam paaji didn’t say anything for a while. Then he gave him one whack and he said, ‘Now you believe it?'” He added that later, Dharmendra got better at handling his anger.

Johnny shared that people like Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna were quite “daring” in real life too, but said that since artists are seen as entertainers, people hardly take them seriously when they show anger in public. The veteran actor shared that he still catches up with Dharmendra very often. “I met him just last week, he really loves me. We play cards all the time,” he shared.

In the same conversation, Johnny said that even he was a bit short tempered growing up, and had to learn to control his anger. He shared that once, when he was shooting with Vinod Khanna, a passing autorickshaw driver was trying to flirt with the female actor they were working with. This angered Johnny, and he went and yelled at the autorickshaw driver, but the driver drove away while laughing at Johnny.
